Cultural Council Awards $15,700 Grant to the
Lloyd Center
The Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), a
state agency, has awarded the Lloyd Center
for the Environment (Dartmouth, MA) a grant
of $15,700 to support its Science Curriculum
Reform and Development initiative. Financial
support from the MCC’s Organizational
Support Program enables the Lloyd Center to
provide science programs to schools that
might not otherwise be able to afford them,
such as the public elementary schools in
Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Fall River, and
Westport. With school budgets as tightly
restricted, as they are today, the Lloyd
Center’s ability to provide interactive and
effective science teaching has proven to be
particularly important.
Awarded through a competitive process, this
grant signifies that the Lloyd Center for
the Environment provides a high level of
quality in its programs, community service
and administrative ability. This award is
intended to fund two innovative Lloyd Center
environmental science curricula, the
fifth-grade Turn-the-Tide and the
third-grade Feathery Focus education
programs, both of which have proven to be
highly successful over the past three years.
Working in collaboration with each school
system’s Director of Science Curricula,
Lloyd Center staff ensures that
town-specific issues become an integral part
of each program.
The Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) has
a budget of $13 million, including $12
million from the state of Massachusetts and
grants from the National Endowment for the
Arts, the Wallace Foundation, and other
sources. Its funds reach every community in
Massachusetts. The mission of the MCC is to
promote excellence, education, access and
diversity in the arts, humanities and
interpretive sciences in order to improve
the quality of life for all Massachusetts
residents and to contribute to the economic
vitality of our communities. The
not-for-profit cultural industry is a $4.2
billion economic impact in the state.
