Scallop Expert to
Address Lloyd Center Annual Meeting
Professor Kevin D. E. Stokesbury, Ph.D.,
Chair of the Department of Fisheries and
Oceanography at UMass Dartmouth’s School for
Marine Science and Technology, has accepted
an invitation to be the keynote speaker at
this year’s Annual Meeting of the Lloyd
Center for the Environment (Dartmouth).
Dr. Stokesbury, who earned his doctorate in
Marine Ecology at Université Laval in Québec
City (Canada), has long been recognized for
his highly regarded contributions to sea
scallop research. He is, perhaps, best known
for having conducted what is believed to be
the most comprehensive survey of the
Atlantic sea scallop resource ever
undertaken.
In 1999, Professor Stokesbury was
responsible for designing innovative
equipment and techniques which were used to
conduct unique video surveys along the
off-shore northeast waters of the United
States. The results of his research have
been used over the years to provide
spatially explicit estimates of sea scallop
density and size-distributions present
there. The Massachusetts Marine Fisheries
Advisory Commission credits his work with
significantly helping regulators design
management plans that have boosted the sea
scallop fishery, while conserving the
resource.
In 2002, Dr. Stokesbury was awarded the
prestigious President’s Award for Public
Service by the University of Massachusetts.
Two years later, in recognition of his
contributions to sea scallop research, he
received the 2004 Belding Award during a
ceremony at the university's Advanced
Technology and Manufacturing Center. D’Arcy
MacMahon, Executive Director of the Lloyd
Center, calls it a “privilege and an honor
to have Dr. Stokesbury share his work with
us, and allow us a peak into his critical
work with these ‘amazing critters'!”
