Annual Regatta
planned for the Slocum River
To
celebrate the completion of it’s new
waterfront pier and launching float, the
Lloyd Center for the Environment is
establishing an annual regional regatta, the
“Slocum River Regatta ”, scheduled for the
morning of Saturday, September 9, 2006. The
event is open to more than 15 different
classes that include single and double
racing sculls, recreational rowing craft,
whaleboats, kayaks, and canoes, all in
men’s, women’s and mixed categories. An
open-to-all-boats recreational row will
immediately follow the completion of the
last “competitive” event. The emphasis of
the Regatta is on good fun and enjoyment of
the scenic Slocum River.
The race course of about two miles has been
laid out on the lower Slocum River. The
Lloyd Center pier and float will mark the
starting line, with the outward leg to the
north and a return leg to the start-finish
line. Boat launch will be at the Demarest
Lloyd State Park. All participants whose
entry applications are received by September
5th, will receive a t-shirt with a
distinctive race logo, while winners in each
event category will be awarded medals. A
post-race light cookout and awards
ceremonies will follow the race. All
proceeds will benefit the Lloyd Center’s
environmental research and educational
programs. Look for more information and
entry forms at
www.slocumregatta.org.
