Venture out into various locations in the quiet, dark winter woods of Dartmouth during the predawn hours, when local owls of our region are highly active. Screech, Great Horned, Barred, and Long-eared owls are potential species heard and seen.
Around sunrise, you'll depart the forest to visit Barney's Joy beach, where other seabirds and the beautiful winter beach itself can be enjoyed. On occasion, diurnal owls such as Short-eared and Snowy owls can be seen.
At the outing's conclusion, you'll be treated to a light breakfast of bagels and coffee back at the Lloyd Center. Dress warmly and bring a flashlight.
Register online or call 508-558-2918. If you have specific questions regarding the walk, please call Jamie at 508-990-0505 x23 or email him at jbogart@lloydcenter.org.
*windy conditions which obscure owl calls and reduce owl activity will cause postponement.

Spring Woodcock Walk 6:45 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Members: $8 Non-members: $10
Pre-registration required. Limit: 20 Registration Deadline: Monday, March 24th, 4 p.m.
Meeting place: Friends Academy (end of long drive, near river), 1088 Tucker Road, Dartmouth
Leader: Jamie Bogart, Lloyd Center Research Associate
Experience a true spectacle in early spring as you observe the American Woodcock (Scolopax minor) courtship flight in Dartmouth where many fields that serve as staging areas exist. These early migrants are often visible before snowmelt and are a true sign of spring.
The woodcock is a unique member of the shorebird family because it spends its life near woodlands, more like an upland bird. In addition to open habitats, woodcocks require early successional to mature hardwood forests containing earthworms (their main food source), adequate coverage, and edge habitat for ground nesting along field borders. The Friends Academy property situated along the Paskamansett River offers this habitat.
The program will start with an overview of American woodcock biology, and some relaxed evening birding. When the skies have dimmed we'll listen for the trademark 'peent' call, and watch for displays. At the conclusion of the outing when darkness sets in, we'll play an owl callback tape along the river.
Suitable for all ages. Bring: binoculars, flashlight, folding chair (if desired)
Register online or call 508-558-2918. If you have specific questions regarding the walk, please call Jamie at 508-990-0505 x23 or email him at jbogart@lloydcenter.org.
